Today has been a very, very sad day at our house. Our neighbours had to put their precious little cat Sophie down this morning. Sophie had feline asthma, which can be a manageable disease in some cats but in some it is progressive. After trying different medications and doing their best to help her, they made the very difficult and brave decision to let her go peacefully now rather than let the disease get much worse and take her life.
We moved into our home last July and bonded instantly with these neighbours. They have become great friends over the last year and we spend lots of time together. There's something so comforting about schlepping across the yard in your slippers to enjoy a cup of coffee and a nice chat with your neighbour. We have so much in common, perhaps most notably our love for our cats. It's wonderful to have a friend that you can tell a cute story about your cat and know that they are actually interested and understand just how special it is to have furry little ones as part of your family.
So there were lots of tears today but also some relief that Sophie's not suffering any more. As hard as this has been, I'm really glad I was here to support them through this. This afternoon, we went to a garden centre and bought a little pink Barberry shrub to plant in their yard in her memory. It's petite, cute, and girlie, just like sweet little "Soph".
